Department Overview

The OHSU Digestive Health Center (DHC), located at Portland South Waterfront, is a multidisciplinary center offering services in the ambulatory setting for General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Bariatric Surgery, and Nutrition. The surgical team is supported by a team of surgeons, as well as a nurse, medical assistant and scheduler that work closely together to provide excellent care for complex patients with Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) and General Surgery conditions. The patient experience begins with their initial referral and can include clinic visits and teaching, surgery, and ongoing complex follow-up care.

Function/Duties of Position

We are seeking a clinic RN Coordinator that provides professional, comprehensive nursing care and coordination for this complex surgical patient population. The RN Coordinator will provide care coordination, assessment and triage, medication management and clinical support to the surgery faculty providers in the clinic setting.  With faculty support, the RN coordinator will require independent critical decision making skills to assess this complex patient population which includes oncology.

Outpatient Clinical Care 
  • The RN coordinator collaborates with other members of the Digestive Health Center and HPB / Gen Surgery teams to ensure that patient flow is expedited both during clinical visits and during remote interactions.
  • The RN coordinator is an active member of a larger multidisciplinary team, whose role is to facilitate communication, implement changes to the patients care plan, and track outcomes between other specialties which may include GI, Hepatology, Oncology, Nutrition, Social Work, and inpatient services.
  • Coordinates and implements the patient’s plan of care thru the entire care continuum; from the initiation of the referral through the entire treatment course including surgical recovery and surveillance.
  • The RN Coordinator tracks and ensures that Provider orders that result from the new patient visit are recorded and executed in timely fashion and triages and responds to or refers inquiries appropriately.  Recognizes and reports specific physical and emotional conditions/needs/concerns of the patients to appropriate members of the health care team.  Alerts Providers to unusual observations of patients to facilitate immediate attention
  • Triages all urgent patient calls; triages Provider calls and assists with communication when necessary. Uses standing orders to manage patient care when appropriate
  • Triage result pools and assists with follow-up and treatment plans
  • Clarifies and accurately executes provider orders, per established protocol
  • Recognizes and effectively responds to emergencies.  Speaks with Providers directly in all emergency situations.
  • Assesses patient/family status and needs both actual and potential according to established standards.
  • Assists with appropriate program placement if needed.
  • Acts as a patient advocate, preserving basic patients and family rights. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of practice specific standards of care in actual performance.
  • Recognizes ethical issues and takes appropriate action in the provision of care
  • Maintains current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in modes of administration.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary patient care conferences such as tumor boards as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development of multidisciplinary treatment protocols and algorithms

 Required Qualifications


  • External applicants: Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • Internal applicants: Associate's Degree in Nursing

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses

  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)
  • BLS must not expire during orientation or probation period, and must have the same expiration date (upload documentation with online application)


  • Specialty Experience: 4-8 weeks
  • Experience, but not in specialty area: 6-10 weeks

Preferred Qualifications


  • Current OHSU employees: BSN preferred


  • Recent experience in an ambulatory surgery / oncology setting
